Reformative action imperative to tackle corruption

This is what the authors of a new book on “Confronting Corruption”, Basel Institute Chairman Mark Pieth and TI co-founder Fritz Heimann, argue. Their chronicle of global anti-corruption evolution provides a realistic assessment of the present state of affairs of anti-corruption efforts by critically evaluating what existing anticorruption programs and treaties have accomplished and documenting their shortcomings, while developing an action agenda for the next decade. In this, they also argue that the forces of globalization and digital communication will level the playing field and erode the secrecy corruption requires.

MACN Argentina achieves milestone in corruption prevention for ship clearance

An anti-corruption Collective Action initiative led by MACN and BSR and supported by Governance Latam has made significant strides in reducing corruption risks in the ship clearance process in Argentina. Previously, a lack of regulatory clarity has opened doors to discretionary requests for facilitation payments in the amount of several thousand USD on average per ship. A new resolution passed just now as a result of the efforts of this multistakeholder initiative has led to a new control system that will significantly reduce these risks. Basel Institute Letter of Commitment to UN Global Compact

The Basel Institute has recently published its letter of commitment to the UN Global Compact and its Ten Principles. The Basel Institute has partnered with UNGC since 2013 in support of our shared goal of combating corruption. The letter of commitment is the Basel Institute’s second Communication on Engagement and describes activities and outcomes of our efforts in support of the UN Global Compact Principles, and in particular its tenth principle on corruption, from November 2015 through October 2017. Gemma Aiolfi appointed member of new external advisory council to leading Peruvian engineering and construction company

Graña y Montero, a Lima based group of engineering and infrastructure service companies operating in five countries in Latin America, announced last week the formation of its new external advisory council in matters of Corporate Governance, Ethics and Compliance. 

The company has appointed three outstanding professionals with expertise in legal strategy, business and international compliance to contribute to the Board's management on corporate governance and strategic business issues, and to support the tasks of the Risk and Compliance Committee.

Corporate Governance Capacity Building Initiative for Malaysian SMEs

The Corporate Governance Capacity Building Initiative for Malaysian SMEs, an effort of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) in conjunction with the Basel Institute on Governance (BIoG) kicked off with a half–day conference on "stepping up corporate governance and anti-corruption practices", specifically in the SME sector on 20 July 2017. It focused on the importance of SMEs, the backbone of the Malaysian economy, to take ownership of compliance and corporate governance to ensure sustained competitiveness on the global market. Upcoming event: Stepping up corporate governance, compliance and anti-corruption practices

On 20 July 2017, the Basel Institute on Governance in cooperation with Nestor Advisors, UK will organise a half-day conference in Kuala Lumpur on issues and challenges faced by both SMEs and non SMEs in inculcating good governance and compliance in their respective industry. The overall aim of this conference is to accelerate and make governance and compliance more effective in organisations in Malaysia, especially, in the SME sector.

Gemma Aiolfi, Head of Compliance, Corporate Governance and Collective Action at the Basel Institute and David Risser, director and partner at Nestor Advisors, will hold the keynote speeches.

Moving with Africa - Opportunities for Business and Development

On 28 June 2017, Gemma Aiolfi, Head of Corporate Governance, Compliance and Collective Action at the Basel Institute, will take part in a panel discussion during the ECAS 2017 Business and Development Forum “Moving with Africa” at the University of Basel. 

The breakaway panel session on “Accountability and anti-corruption measures” will tackle the issue of Corruption and bribery as major concerns both for socio-economic development and for doing business in an African context. It will taking into account different perspectives and ask what corruption means for the societies concerned, what role rules, norms and interests play, and what individuals and organizations can do in order to prevent themselves from being involved in illegal and illegitimate activities.
